Hull House
Point Lookout, NY
Uniquely situated on the curve of an oceanfront beach, this house has unrestricted views of the Atlantic Ocean, the barrier island, Jones Inlet and the Bay. The program offers first floor entry and bedrooms assembled so as to afford each a water view, and an upper living floor and master bedroom suite with similar independent ocean views and private outdoor space. Inspired by the surrounding marine environment, the living floor is perched above the water, with the assemblage of smaller volumes in support – as a vessel. Material detailing draws from the ocean front setting of the protective rock jetties, ocean sands and grasses, with natural stone and wood finishes, and redwood and copper detailing. Capturing the owner’s requirements of views to every sun rise and sunset, and unique features such as a cantilevered pool deck, and an expansive south facing, operable glass wall, the project has proved to be a stimulating challenge for the design team.
